The Girl Behind The Pages

Hi everyone, I’m Rae!

How did I get to be a freelance editor and total fangirl?

It all started with a challenge…

You see my grandmother was tired of my attitude after I completed eighth grade. I was pretty angst-y. So, she challenged a sulking thirteen-year-old me to read one book a day the summer before I started high school. I tried to cheat by reading tiny ‘dime’ novels only to end up having a good time. I really, really disliked reading, then one day I didn’t.

Stories are a way of escape and expression. Writing is an outlet to get the jumble of my thoughts onto paper. My voice and writing are still being developed. I’m a work in progress – which is completely okay. Will I write the next American novel? Eh. Will I write a bestseller? Hmm, maybe. The fun comes from exploring different styles, characters, and world and not giving up.  Long story short – don’t give up! I did and after two years I finally realized the piece of me that is missing was writing. That being said, I started writing again! I have a Dark Lit, YA in the works. Sshh.

Now from my first blog post, way back in 2015, entitled The Beginning, I gave a brief background on what I’m was doing in my life. That’s changed and here’s the updated… update?

I’m a college graduate with a major in English with a concentration in Creative Writing. I continue to suffer from making life decisions, am going through an approaching mid-twenties crisis, and am still navigating this whole mystery of adulting. That’s the basics.

I’m also still a fangirl. Meaning I get way too attached to certain characters and my list of imaginary fictional boyfriends continues to expand. Some of my favorite authors are Sarah J. Maas, Leigh Bardugo, Deborah Harkness, and… well you get the point since the list just disappeared off the table and out of the room. I read a lot and can’t pinpoint my singular favorite book of all time. I can say some personal favorites are The Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness and To Kill A Kingdom by Alexandra Christo. I prefer fiction (romance, fantasy, etc.) over non-fiction. I’m in the transition period from YA to Adult… just kidding! I still read a ton of YA, especially YA fantasy. Oops?

I’ll let my reviews and blog content speak for themselves throughout the course of this blog’s (hopefully long) lifespan. Though this blog has transitioned into a freelance editing business this year which is bittersweet but it was time for the big leap. My beloved blog, now called affectionately Bookish Looks, is a side adventure that continues as the sidekick to my new adventure of owning a business. What mischief can I get into now? We shall see.

I think that about covers everything. I could go on… but I need to have a little mystery in my life!

Thanks for reading!

The cute and convenient short bio:

Rae is a writing and reading instructor at an elementary school by day, freelance editor by night, and fangirl at every other available opportunity. She always knew books were her passion, well after her grandmother’s challenge to read a book a day, and obtained her B.A. in English with a concentration in Creative Writing from Arcadia University. Currently, she’s drowning in her TBR list, tackling her MFA, outlining her would be novel, and expanding her freelancing business while looking for more bookish things to get involved with. She is active on Twitter, Instagram, and sometimes Facebook when she remembers.
